Ian is an aggressive trial attorney and Utah criminal defense lawyer. From his roots as a legal-aid attorney in rural Montana, to his years as a criminal public-defender, Ian knows his way around a courtroom. He has successfully argued for favorable outcomes for some of the most difficult clients in the legal system. He has represented thousands of clients, made hundreds of appearances in court, and tried over 30 cases to a jury.
Ian is a defense lawyer at Strong & Hanni. Before joining the firm, Ian worked for the Salt Lake Legal Defender Association as a criminal public defender. During his time as a public defender, Ian represented clients charged with everything from minor misdemeanors and DUIs to first-degree felony, life-without-parole, homicide and sex-related offenses. Ian uses this vast litigation experience in his current practice, where he focuses on civil litigation and criminal defense.
Ian graduated with Honors from the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. While in law school, Ian was an article’s editor on the law review, a member of the national moot court team, and participated in the Rocky Mountain Innocence Center legal clinic.
Ian is a native of Cottonwood Heights and grew up playing contact sports (lacrosse and ice-hockey), but oddly enough, never football. When he’s not busy being a lawyer, Ian is ideally hiking, mountain biking, or backcountry skiing. But usually, these days, he is at home with his wife and newborn baby boy.
